HBO Scientology Documentary
by tresdecu inhas anyone else seen the hbo scientology documentary 'going clear' - wow...cults are just mind-blowing you wonder how people can fall for that garbage, then you (those of us former/fading jws) look in the mirror.. i would love for someone to make a major jw documentary like this.
'going clear' is getting a lot of press.
poor tom cruise...he looks like quite the whack job in it too.

Dang and the new mission impossible looks so good. The doc mad a good case for Cruise being complicit though because they put him in a bubble. Its good to be the king over there. Bad to be a subject.
I highly recommend the book "Going Clear". It reads like fiction and is very entertaining. It speaks to someone who is or was a JW, and JW's get an honorable mention towards the back of it.

Worst Memorial Talk Ever!
by The Searcher ini honestly have never heard such claptrap being delivered in a memorial talk.. the speaker repeatedly put down the way other religions administered the bread & wine, and claimed that witnesses do it exactly as the bible describes.
oh yeah????.
he forgot to mention - when reading aloud 1 corinthians 11:25 - that after passing the bread, a full meal was to be shared, before the wine was passed around!

In a nutshell, what is the wackiest jw thing?
by stuckinarut2 inwhat is the wackiest...strangest....most unusual jw teaching or practice?

Well 2 categories of wacky I think. there is old school turn of the century wacky.
Old School : Black people will get to be white in the new word (you know......perfect). The president of the society building a home in San Diego to winter in for his health without anyone seeming to have a problem with that. And the fact that many Jehovah's witnesses don't care about these things because you know......its not like we believe that NOW.
New School : The wackiness is much more nuanced....and dangerous. Convincing a mother that it is actually in her child's best interest for her to withdrawn her parental affection and nurturing, so as to make them feel "loss" and they can return to their religion. That s a great one.
Convincing everyone that a God seemingly obsessed with blood in a variety of forms, wants them to not use blood medically, except sometimes when its almost blood anymore kinda, but still you shouldn't take blood because its like eating it, even though the context of scripture none of hat even applies, sure people have died but they are alive to Jehovah blah blah blah.
Just wacky. Yes a short time ago for me....it was gospel.

You guys are live blogging this eh? Cool.
I am happy to say this is the first year i am NOT attending.
Yep.....there are ex JW's that go, and those that don't. I made a big leap today.

Need your thoughts... Again
by Garrett in(sorry for any typos, i'm on my ipad) so, remember how in my last post i mentioned that i had told some of my dear friends why i decided to leave?
well, one of those friends was a girl... not just any girl, but rather, a girl that i've loved since the moment i've met her.
she used to say that she considered me her best friend and we were really close she just never really returned my feelings for her due to different circumstances i presume.. but i always felt a connection.. anyways, after telling her that i decided to leave because of multiple reasons but that the tolerance of child sex abuse was the final straw, she responded asking where i got my information and that she wanted to talk about it with me.. this feels like an opportunity for me to tell her about my findings, what do you think?

I like the one above to start on that subject. I agree you take it easy. Like you are having ahard time with it. Eventually push it to JW facts. That site is a killer.

Going clear: Scientology
by James Mixon ina must see if you haven't seen it.
some scary stuff.
they pay their workers.

I was about to post on this and see if anyone has seen it.
The book was phenominal. Scientology is on its way out. 100%.
However, their policy of how former members are treated, and of "disconnection", is shockingly similar to Jehovahs Witnesses.

So honestly I'm split on this. I am still connected through friends and family, and I was certainly at one point the local golden boy and in the "inner circle". There are people I know that very much are as Mr Theocratic described (great name btw). I have a couple friends who basically believe its nonsense, and have even said as much. But they still play the game.
As a JW apologist I used to assert something I still think is true to an extent. EVERYONE sits int he KH with varying degrees of faith in this or that, one thing or another. One person thinks blood is BS, another thinks the generation teaching is ridiculous, and maybe someone else is there because the people are nice and its all they know and don't really have a basis of faith. All of those things are true. Everyone, has "doubts" about things. That to me isn't surprising. But beyond the occasional complaint, they nod their heads and still kind of do their own thing unless a large amount of social pressure comes on.
So I don't know if I can subscribe to the idea that there is a turning of the tide so to speak with these things coming down recently. People know I no longer attend, and many have remained friendly, invited us out, and more. They throw in a few things here and there sometimes. Little jabs to try to bring me back. Its mainly funny. But it reveals them as true believers. I still think this is the vast majority. The people that have seen the strings on the puppet show maybe complain or have knowledge they feel may be special, but what is important is what you DO, not what you THINK.
that is true of all of us too. At one point i realized what I was DOING, was hypocrisy even if I personally was out mentally. So I changed my behavior to not support even by attendance or anything ancillary, the organization.
